Alarming Spread and Severe Symptoms
As the world grapples with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, another mosquito-borne disease, dengue fever, has emerged as a serious threat in tropical and subtropical areas. Dengue fever is caused by the dengue virus, which is transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes.
Rising Cases and Fatalities
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dengue fever has become a global burden, with an estimated 100-400 million infections and up to 22,000 deaths annually. In recent months, several countries have reported alarming outbreaks of dengue fever, including Brazil, Thailand, India, and the Philippines.
Symptoms and Complications
Dengue fever typically presents with flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, and fatigue. However, in severe cases, it can progress to dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) or dengue shock syndrome (DSS), which are life-threatening conditions. DHF can cause bleeding, while DSS leads to severe low blood pressure and organ failure.
